Samsung: Curlable OLED TV is expected to be commercialized in 3 years

Kim Seong-cheol, director of the Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) development room at the Samsung Mobile Display Company (SMD, Samsung Mobile Display), showed an ultra-thin display. The product was received by many manufacturers at the Japan International Flat Panel Display Technology Exhibition (FPD 2010) held last month.

Kim Seong-cheol said: "With the current technology, it is possible to produce a display with a thickness of only 0.1 mm. As long as the technology of rolling up the screen is not broken, a 'rollable TV' can be produced soon." Looking at the development trend, it is expected to be commercialized by 2013 or 2014.

Samsung Mobile Display, Inc., a half-owned company of Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI, is currently developing next-generation displays for "rollable TVs" and "collapsible phones."

At the company's Cheonan factory, banners depicting winners of the "Sride of the Samsung Award" for two consecutive years are everywhere. From this, we can also see the proportion of Samsung Mobile Display Company in the group. Samsung Group regards Samsung SDI's rechargeable battery and Samsung Mobile Display's Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) as a future-oriented industry, investing trillions of won per year.

As Kim Seong-cheol said, we will soon be able to see a TV that can be rolled up on the wall when not in use. In addition, a mobile phone that can be worn on the wrist and turned into a straight quadrilateral type is also expected to come out. Kim Seong-cheol said: "The technology development in this field is gratifying, even the researchers are surprised."

Samsung is also developing products that can be used to view newspapers on a paper-like display. With your finger on the screen, you can view the layouts in the size of the newspaper. The product is expected to be commercially available after 2015. Samsung Mobile Display's Tianan plant is also developing a transparent display and using a display to record electronic ID cards on the front, back and side of the face.

Samsung believes that just as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) replace the picture tubes, AMOLEDs will also replace liquid crystal displays. Samsung has spent 1.5 trillion won this year to expand its production line and plans to invest more next year. The industry predicts that LG will also follow Samsung's investment of trillions of won. Currently in the global AMOLED industry, Samsung mobile display company's share of up to 99%.
