Jaguar Land Rover, the UK's largest automaker, said it plans to build more than 100 autopilot fleets over the next four years to test autopilot technology and intelligent network connectivity technology. Later this year, the first fleet will be on the road.
Jaguar Land Rover’s first automated driving road test will be conducted on city roads and highways close to the company’s headquarters, with a total distance of 41 miles (approximately 66 kilometers).
According to the British government, the value of the global automated driving market has reached 900 billion pounds (1.29 trillion US dollars), but the development of autonomous driving needs to overcome legal obstacles (including who will be responsible for auto-driving accidents and other issues).
In March, the UK announced a road test plan and subsequently launched a hearing to adjust insurance and motor vehicle regulations to coincide with the plan to auto-drive cars on the road in 2020.
Tony Harper, director of research and development for Jaguar Land Rover, said: The company's 3D traffic sensors can identify obstacles and wireless traffic signals between cars, thereby reducing traffic safety risks.
Harper added: "Our connection and automatic technology will reduce traffic flow, ease traffic congestion, and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents."
Nowadays, major auto manufacturers have started the open-and-hang mode in the convenience of automatic driving. The British government is very supportive of automated driving technology. In addition to investing heavily in technological development, it also fully supports Ford’s automated driving program and allows Volvo to test unmanned technology in London from next year. Nissan in Japan also plans to produce self-driving cars for the general public in the Sunderland factory in the northern city of England.
However, traditional automakers face challenges from cutting-edge companies such as Tesla and technology companies such as Alphabet.
