South Korea invests 400 billion to become a global LED production power

The Korean government plans to increase its facilities investment and research and development efforts to make Korea one of the world's top three semiconductor light-emitting diode (LED) producers by 2012.

The South Korean government said recently that the plan requires the government to invest 400 billion won (about 383 million US dollars) in research and development and infrastructure. Currently, Korean LED manufacturers are investing about 3 trillion won to build new production lines. At present, the total annual output value of Korean LED products is about 1.2 billion US dollars.

South Korean government officials stated that the government will assist in the establishment of a 50 billion won procurement fund in 2009 to promote the production and application of LEDs.

LED products are 80% more energy efficient than traditional general lighting equipment, so they are more environmentally friendly. In recent years, the demand for such products in the fields of information technology, digital equipment and medical equipment has increased significantly.
