OLED third quarter revenue increased by 60% compared with the same period last year

DisplaySearch's fourth quarter OLED shipment report latest research data shows that OLED's overall revenue in the third quarter of 2008 reached 141 million US dollars, down 11% compared with the previous quarter, but up 60% over the same period last year . From the perspective of AMOLED suppliers, Taiwan's Qijing Optoelectronics shipments ranked second, while shipments in the third quarter hit a record high, up 14% from the previous quarter. Samsung SDI (which will merge with Samsung Electronics' small and medium-sized divisions to form Samsung's mobile display division) is still the number one supplier, with shipments in the third quarter slightly lower than in the second quarter. Overall, the global third-quarter AMOLED shipments only slightly increased compared with the second quarter, with a total shipment of 1.7 million.

In the second quarter, PMOLED saw a high growth due to the large number of mobile phone sub-screen shipments. However, in the third quarter, due to the reduction in mobile phone secondary screen orders, shipments decreased by 22% from the previous quarter. However, when the full-color PMOLED application becomes more popular, the monochrome PMOLED order will inevitably face a reduction, but this will also increase the average selling price of the third-quarter OLED panel.

Jennifer Colegrove, director of DisplaySearch Display Technology Research, PhD pointed out that OLED has many fascinating features: wide viewing angle, wide color gamut, faster response time, more power saving, lighter and more operability at different ambient temperatures. At the same time, the technology has made great progress in recent years, and the current technology has basically met the requirements for the service life of consumer electronic products. However, OLEDs still face the price pressure of TFTLCDs and PMLCDs. At the same time, Jennifer also said that the OLED display market is changing rapidly. The new company continues to join, and the existing company expands its operations or silently withdraws from the market or shifts to the business focus. This industry has certain market risks as well as certain operational risks.

The following is a brief description of the global OLED shipments in the third quarter. Taiwan's RiTdisplay ranked first in the third quarter of 2008, surpassing Samsung SDI shipments. The third quarter shipments were basically the same as the second quarter, accounting for 36% of total shipments. Due to the sharp decline in shipments of PMOLEDs, SamsungSDI lags behind Sic Bo Technology in the third quarter. However, due to the basic maintenance of AMOLED shipments, it is still in the top spot in the earnings segment. TDK beat competitor Pioneer to third place in the third quarter, accounting for 17% of total shipments, while Pioneer fell to fourth with 12%. Univision is the fifth. The top five suppliers accounted for 95% of total OLED shipments in the third quarter of 2008.

Due to the global economic impact and competitive pressure from LCD, DisplaySearch revised the global OLED shipment forecast from 2008 to 2015. However, we expect that AMOLED will continue to generate new applications and will bring new growth momentum to the industry.
