The browser development organization Mozilla is working hard to bring social virtual reality (VR) to the Internet: The non-profit organization announced in a blog post on Monday that it has established a team that specializes in research and development to bring web-based social networking. Fodor joined Mozilla in September. He previously co-founded social virtual reality startup AltspaceVR, which was recently sold to Microsoft after the funds were exhausted earlier this summer. And although many members of the Altspace VR team have since turned to research and development of Microsoft's virtual reality and augmented reality hardware experience, Fodor has actually brought a handful of colleagues to Mozilla to form his social mixed reality team.
The team’s work will focus heavily on ensuring that social virtual reality technology works on all heads-up displays and other devices, even if the devices are manufactured by competing vendors. "We believe that the Web is a platform that can provide the best user experience for interactions based on mixed reality," Fodor wrote. "Meeting with other people in the world in mixed reality should be as easy as sharing links, and creating a virtual Space and spending time in it should be as simple as creating a personal website for the first time."
