Comparison of RX test and RxEQ test

In the conformance test of PCIE3.0, it is necessary to test RX receiver test and RX EQ receiver equalization test. Many engineers are not clear about the difference between the two. Let's explain the difference between the two.

What is an RX test?

The RX test is an electrical test that verifies that the DUT can recover the signal for the BER target eye diagram for E-12 or higher. When the test device's TXEQ is set to P7 and P8, the RX test also verifies the Add- In Card can recover signals for E-4 or higher BER target eye diagrams.

What is the RxEQ test?

The RxEQ test is part of the PCIE 3.0 Link EQ test and is used to verify that the device can adjust the TxEQ of the peer device and its own RxEQ so that the device can receive data without errors.

What is the difference between RX testing and RX EQ testing?

1. In the RX test, the BERT puts the DUT in the loopback state via the ConfiguraTIon.Linkwidth.Start state. In the RxEQ test, the BERT places the DUT in the loopback state via the Recovery State, from the ConfiguraTIon.Linkwidth.Start state to the Recovery State. There are many steps, and Recovery State has many steps (such as speed changes and equalization).

Comparison of RX test and RxEQ test

2. In the RX test, the test engineer or test software manually adjusts the TxEQ of the test equipment to the optimum value, based on the BER observed in the test equipment to select the best value. In the RxEQ test, the DUT will test the TxEQ of the equipment. Adjust to the optimal value and select the best value based on the DUT's TxEQ selection algorithm.

3. The RX test only verifies that it can pass the E-12 test. When testing in the PCIE Workshop, the RUT developer is usually asked, “What is the DUT's equalization setting?”. Then adjust the TxEQ of the test equipment and run the Rx test. The RxEQ test allows the DUT to make its own adjustments. The RxEQ test verifies that the DUT can automatically adjust its RxEQ and TxEQ of the test equipment to pass the E-12 test.
