China's chip production share accounts for only 10% of the world

Although China's chip industry has developed rapidly in the last ten years, 90% of its products are still dependent on imports, and the fact that imports exceed petroleum prices every year is worrying.

The chip is vividly compared to the country's "industrial food", is the core of the information industry, and is the "heart" of all machine equipment. Zou Xuecheng, director of the National Integrated Circuit Personnel Training Center (Wuhan), said that according to the calculation of the International Monetary Fund, the output value of a chip of 1 yuan can drive the related electronic information industry's 10 yuan output value and bring 100 yuan of GDP.

With such lucrative market scales, Europe and the United States and other developed countries have included the chip industry in national strategic industries. Leading semiconductor companies and foundries in the world invest heavily in research and development of new technologies, expand production capacity, and seize the opportunities of the industry. In 2012, South Korea’s Samsung investment reached US$14.2 billion, and US Intel reached US$12.5 billion.

In contrast, China's chip industry started late. Until 2000, there were only 2,000 employees in the chip industry, and the chips produced only accounted for 3% of the global market. After more than ten years of development, the number of employees has reached nearly 30,000, and the production share has accounted for about 10% of the global chip market.
