GE Global R&D Center has announced that GE Lighting and Konica Minolta (KM) have made major breakthroughs in the development of organic light-emitting diodes, and the two companies are taking a step forward in manufacturing high-efficiency O LEDs . GE and KM's R&D staff demonstrated white-light OLEDs that achieve illumination quality, and the solution-based coating materials used are important conditions for low-cost manufacturing of OLEDs.
GE's OLED lighting technology leader Anil Duggal announced the latest technology advancement at the International Light Source Technology Conference in Eindhoven, The Netherlands this week.
“GE and KM have completed many tasks that OLED R&D institutions believe are impossible,†Duggal said. “We have created long-life, high-efficiency white OLEDs for commercial applications by solution coating rather than vacuum coating. Lighting devices. This allows us to mass-produce OLEDs by roll-to-roll spin coating, a spin-on production method that has been well used in the printing industry."
GE and KM plan to produce OLEDs in a high-speed roll-to-roll format rather than vacuum-based mass production used in the OLED display industry. The roll-to-roll production method makes it possible to commercialize OLEDs and apply them to general lighting. Solution, or wet coating is the most productive production method for coating the most important organic material layers in OLED lighting devices.
John Strainic, general manager of global products for GE Lighting, which will commercialize GE O LED technology , said, "This coating method is very suitable for the roll-to-roll production process and will enable high-speed production of OLEDs. Simply put, this new Technology shows us that OLED lighting is coming soon."
GE and KM's technology R&D and product development teams have been working together to develop OLED lighting technology since 2007. The technical cooperation between GE and KM, the world's leading imaging product provider, has accelerated the advancement of OLED lighting technology.
In addition to this new milestone in lighting efficiency, the R&D team has also made steady progress in improving the life of OLEDs produced by the roll-to-roll process and the quality of light.

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) is a thin film in which an organic substance is sandwiched between two electrodes, and is electrically excited to emit light. OLED represents a revolution in lighting products that will provide people with completely different lighting methods.
In addition, OLEDs will have the potential to significantly improve lighting efficiency, environmental protection, and at the same time provide the same quality of illumination as existing lighting products at lower energy consumption.
GE and KM plan to bring the first OLED flexible lighting products to market in 2011.
