ST launches automotive intelligent electronic system motion sensor AIS226DS

STMicroelectronics (ST) has launched a new sensor AIS226DS for automotive electronic systems to accurately measure the movement of cars Lights, electronic parking brakes, advanced security anti-theft systems and automotive dynamic control systems, etc.

AIS226DS is a dual-axis coplanar accelerator with higher measurement accuracy than two independent sensor solutions. The maximum range of the device is ± 6g, where 'g' represents the acceleration of gravity. For example, when a manned rocket is launched into space, the gravitational acceleration experienced by the crew is about 3g. The new AIS226DS can also reliably resolve subtle tilt angles less than 0.02 degrees. The high-precision inclination measurement function is an indispensable function of automatic height adjustment headlights, electronic parking brake and hill start assist (HSA) system.

The device for detecting motion is a miniature MEMS motion detector fabricated on a chip. This device also integrates an interface chip with SPI or I2C output, so that the detector can be directly connected to the electronic control unit (ECU) of the car.

In addition, other automotive systems can also use AIS226DS, for example, traffic accident or illegal driving event recorders, and GPS navigation systems that use car motion data to improve dead reckoning accuracy when satellite signals disappear. AIS226DS can also be used in many applications outside of automobiles, such as vibration detection in industrial equipment, black box monitors for containers, inclinometers, and robotic systems.

The high detection accuracy of AIS226DS is partly due to the low intrinsic noise characteristics of the electronic interface chip. The interface chip contains a high-precision 16-bit analog-to-digital converter, low noise can achieve 14-bit effective conversion resolution within a large bandwidth, corresponding to a resolution of 0.25mg (within 2g full range). In the automotive temperature range of –40 ° C to + 105 ° C, the sensor can maintain high stability and high accuracy (± 70mg), providing a compensation deviation of 0.2mg per degree. AIS226DS adopts a strong SO16W full-mode package, which complies with AEC-Q100 automotive quality standards.

STMicroelectronics is providing AIS226DS test samples to major customers, mass production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010.
