Engineers, musicians must! Three Best Training Listening App

For most engineers and musicians, a sensitive hearing is absolutely necessary; especially when mixing and recording a work, the sensitive hearing makes you go to heaven! Use these apps to “involve” your “unconscious” intuition to make the mixing or recording process more effective!

Auricula

Auricula can be used as an AU plug-in for a personal DAW, or as an application on the iPhone or iPad. It provides several trainings that can be roughly divided into three categories:

"Absolute Sound" - in which it provides a limited choice and prompts you to choose the right answer.

"Comparative frequency comparison" - first show the changes in the sound wave, then you need to identify whether a particular parameter has been increased, decreased, or not changed at all.

"Manual mode" - first show a piece of changed audio, then you have to adjust this audio back to the original version.

Auricula is primarily designed to help users improve their ability to identify changes in eight areas: Gain, Compression, Stereo Imaging, Time Delay, Distortion, Noise, Reverb, Timbre. Whether it is iOS, Android, or Mac, PC system can be downloaded and used. There are accompanying instructional videos at the time of download or other videos on the Auricula website.

2. Studio Ears 2.0

Studio Ears 2.0 is only available for download on iOS devices, with the main goal of training listening and improving mixing control techniques; and proper practice on melody and harmonics. It can be divided into three categories: frequency, theory (even if it is not for musicians, it is easy to get started, professional listening training includes not only frequency but also melody and tone), tools (including good-hand metronome, sine generator)

The auditory test is also divided into three types: “frequency training”, “strength and effect” and “melody and harmonics”.

Frequency training has two modes: “Frequency Quiz Unit” and “Equalizer Control Unit”. The former selects the correct frequency for the user to listen to; the latter adjusts the correct frequency for the EQ in the app.

The Velocity and Effects include: “Volume Mix Unit” where you have to adjust the pacifier to match the volume of each channel to the target; the “Compressor Attack Unit” contains training to distinguish when to attack in a few milliseconds. "Reverb Intensity Unit" is for you to adjust the strength of the Reverb to match the test target.

The final part of the melody and harmonics is designed to help you learn and improve how to distinguish between scale types, chord characteristics and spacing, melody patterns and speed.

3. Quiztones

First of all, Quiztones' interface is not only easy to understand but also attractive. It can be downloaded and used on iOS devices, Mac systems, and Android systems. But the downside is that it is less complete on the Andriod system. Quiztones developers have designed it as a game version of the program, offering ten questions in Tones, EQ and Gain.

In Tones this mode can help you learn how to distinguish frequencies, there are simple and difficult settings to choose from.

In EQ and Gain mode, you can not only provide some sources, but also use the music you want directly from iTunes to let you do the quiz training. These quizzes can help you learn how to distinguish the increase and decrease on EQ.

The price varies depending on the iOS device or Mac system, and the degree of completeness is different.
