The world's first 3D printing manufacturing drone officially began to serve

Five years ago, the University of Southampton designed a drone for 3D printing. Today the aircraft has undergone testing and is officially put into use. The place where it serves is the South Pole, and the job is to open the way for the icebreaker.

The aircraft was named "SULSA" and is an abbreviation for "Southampton University Laser Sintering Aircraft". Laser sintering is a 3D printing technology that uses lasers to melt layers of plastic or metal materials that form a layer to form parts.

The SULSA aircraft weighs about 3 kg, has a wingspan of 2 meters and a top speed of about 100 miles per hour. Its four main components are finished with an EOSINT P730 3D printer made of nylon plastic. A snap-fit connection between the four main components, this design without additional adhesives simplifies assembly and storage, and the process takes only a few minutes.

The SULSA drone served on the Royal Navy icebreaker "HMS Protector" and flew at a speed of about 60 mph after taking off. Using an onboard camera to find a weaker route for the icebreaker. The aircraft basically uses the drone to fly, but is also remotely controlled by the operator. The battery life is about half an hour.

Although SULSA is promoted as the first 3D printing aircraft, in fact, in addition to the main body structure of 3D printing, components such as motors and flight control electronic systems are still traditional parts. As for why these more important parts do not use 3D printing, it is certain It is related to the high temperature of the machine.

Last year, Airbus announced that its new passenger aircraft, the A350 XWB, will have more than 1,000 3D printed non-metallic parts. 3D printing has been seen as the next revolution in manufacturing, while metal 3D printing is evolving. At present, the strength of 3D printed metal parts is superior to that of traditional cast metal parts, but it is inferior to forging, CNC cold working, and single crystal cast metal parts.
