OmniShield provides high performance security applications for automotive/industrial/wearing

Consumers today can do more with electronic devices than ever before; at the same time, the important data generated by these devices has become extremely valuable to potential offenders. In addition, another challenge is that installing applications from untrusted sources can make it more difficult to identify and block possible security breaches.

There is now a new OmniShield solution that helps operators and consumers overcome this security concern at the platform level. This solution provides chip manufacturers and OEMs with the advanced security architecture they need to develop better devices. Figure 1 shows the hardware and software architecture of OmniShield. This article will explain some of the use cases of OmniShield in today's connected world.

Wearables, smartphones and tablets

When it comes to mobile computing, we usually refer to smartphones and tablets. Last year, mobile devices have expanded to cover a wider range of new-style devices, including wearable devices, two-in-one devices, and other mobile devices.

These devices can communicate with each other and with the outside world; you can play games on your mobile phone during lunch breaks, then go home and continue playing on your tablet. Your smart watch can monitor your heartbeat and pass the data to your phone; your wearable device can also access emails and send you a text message when you receive a new message. You can also take your personal tablet computer to work and use it to record important information during a meeting.

OmniShield solution for mobile and wearable applications

These use cases have become a reality due to the rapid evolution of software (operating systems and applications) and hardware (chips) of mobile devices. However, devices that are not properly protected can easily become targets of hackers.

By building security at the hardware level, the mobile chip can store user data in different areas, so a security weakness does not affect the integrity of the entire platform. For example, if a downloaded game is infected with malware, the hacker still cannot steal your bank account or health information. You can also completely separate personal and work data, thus ensuring the complete privacy of highly confidential information.

Another use case is the streaming of paid media content. Previously, vendors had to rely on smart cards for encryption, but this increased chip cost and overall performance. By using OmniShield, the mobile processor can display content that is executed on the Android media player in the non-secure zone, while the decrypted portion is placed in an area away from the operating system and in a separate and secure trusted execution environment (Trusted ExecuTIon) Environment, TEE).

Since OmniShield is executed on a unified memory, the buffer used to temporarily store data is also protected. In addition, content is isolated from other software executing in the background, such as a case where multiple applications are executed on a GPU.

Consumer and Industrial IoT

A case occurred in the United States a year ago. Several smart refrigerators are not enough to look at the function of refrigerated sparkling wine. They use processing functions to send spam to businesses and individuals around the world. A large number of emails of up to 100,000 can be issued three times; afterwards, hackers invaded the target through a HVAC system and caused a loss of up to $420 million.

According to news reports, in both cases, hackers can easily bypass the software security system designed by the manufacturer and successfully invade.

These are all examples of hacking attacks on some consumer and industrial IoT devices today. In addition, we see that the current industry forecasts that IoT will grow to a scale of billions in the future; therefore, how to overcome security concerns and create new business models are challenges that must be faced.

IoT gateways and areas where edge devices may be attacked

By using the OmniShield solution, OEMs can build complete security from hardware to the cloud level; for example, a networked processor platform with MIPS M5150 processor (M5150 is a microcontroller that supports hardware virtualization and multiple TEE) .

Devices with built-in MCUs can establish a secure conduit for remote device management and service deployment, and can be executed on operating systems such as Linux that support the graphical user interface. In addition, the M-class processor has an anti-tampering (anTI-tamper) debug interface that does not allow hackers to have a back door that can be sneaked into.

Most smart devices will be connected to the cloud infrastructure. ImaginaTIon has developed an IoT platform called FlowCloud that provides operators with a scalable, secure and easy-to-use solution that includes device and user identity authentication, asynchronous messaging authentication, asynchronous messaging services, event logging, Data storage, secure transactions and electronic payments.

By using the OmniShield platform, automakers can reduce costs and simplify design by safely performing multiple functions on an embedded single chip. Because OmniShield includes cross-platform security virtualization technology, the CPU+GPU subsystem can simultaneously execute infotainment systems and collision detection systems in isolated areas to ensure fail-safe operation.

For DVB applications, the platform can handle standard digital keys such as conditional access (CA) and simultaneously encrypt and display streaming content on the TV's user interface.
