Seoul Semiconductor, one of the world's leading manufacturers of light-emitting diode (LED) environmentally-friendly lighting technology, announced today that it has filed a complaint with the South Korean court by AOT Corporation of Taiwan, requesting that the Seoul Semiconductor White LED patent invalidation be filed, on March 14 in South Korea. The Korean Supreme Court concluded that Seoul Semiconductor won the case. In addition, Seoul Semiconductor has reached an agreement with the Korean LED manufacturer Itswell to obtain a white LED patent license.
As Seoul Semiconductor and Itswell reached a settlement agreement to resolve litigation and claims for white LED patent production rights, Seoul Semiconductor also signed an agreement with Itswell for the licensing of white LED patents. The agreement allows Seoul Semiconductor to impose a royalty on its patents for the company's past and future use of Seoul Semiconductor's white LED production technology.
According to Deutsche Bank's forecast, the LED industry scale will grow to the same level in the memory semiconductor industry in 2017. In the future Korean economy, the proportion of the LED industry in the information technology industry will also become larger and larger, and will be equal to LCD, PDP and mobile phones. Based on the growth prospects of the LED market, about 100 LED companies in Korea, including Seoul Semiconductor, one of the world's top five manufacturers of LED environmental lighting and packaging technology, have invested heavily in technology research and development and business development.
Over the past 15 years, Seoul Semiconductor has continued to invest in technology research and development to expand its patent portfolio, patents registered and acquired in major countries and regions of the LED industry, such as the United States, Europe, Japan, China and Taiwan.
