Panasonic accelerates to TV or withdraws from plasma panel business in March next year

Panasonic’s “de-TVization” is accelerating. On October 9, Japanese media reported that Panasonic had decided to stop producing plasma TV panels at the end of 2013, and also planned to sell the Nisaki Plant in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, as a production base, and fully withdraw the business.

Has stopped developing plasma panels

According to the "Nikkei Business News" report, Matsushita has stopped developing plasma panels, and plans to stop the production of plasma TV panels by the end of fiscal 2013. It is expected that sales in 2014 will be stopped. Panasonic will officially announce the above news within the month.

This coincides with the statement of Matsushita, the new head of Panasonic at the beginning of this year. At the beginning of this year, Jin Heyi announced at the world's largest Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that he would get rid of his dependence on TV and realize "de-TVization."

Matsushita Electric Co., once known as the "father of plasma", plasma panel is one of the main business of Matsushita Electric, occupying the majority of the global plasma panel market. However, in recent years, in the face of the impact of liquid crystal panels, the market share of plasma has been shrinking, and plasma TVs have gradually been eliminated.

The declining plasma TV business has also dragged down the overall performance of Matsushita Electric. In fiscal 2011, Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd. lost 772.2 billion yen (about 9.66 billion US dollars), the largest loss ever. In fiscal 2012, Panasonic lost 754.2 billion yen, a huge deficit in its second consecutive fiscal year.

Close, sell factory turnaround

In order to realize the loss, from 2011 to now, Panasonic has repeatedly reported the news of “slimming” layoffs, which has accumulated more than tens of thousands. In March of this year, Matsushita sold its headquarters building in Tokyo for $536 million.

On the 9th, the Kyodo News reported that Panasonic is coordinating, or the sale of the now-defunct Amois III plant during the year, and the employees engaged in production at the Amagasaki plant will be transferred to other departments.

In January of this year, Matsushita Electric shut down the plasma display company in Shanghai. The company started production in 2001 and is responsible for the production of plasma panels and the assembly of plasma TVs.

At the beginning of the year, Jin Heyi had stated at CES that the business that could not achieve 5% operating profit margin in the next two years would be shut down or sold. Panasonic will strive to expand automobiles, batteries, aviation entertainment systems, hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels and Revenue from corporate business such as LED lighting.
