Marvell 88EM8187 LED controller provides deep dimming and high integration

Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL), a leader in global integrated silicon solutions, today announced the introduction of the Marvell® 88EM8187 LED controller integrated circuit (IC) family. The controllers are phase-cut, deep dimming, single-stage AC/DC constant current controllers for dimmable LED lights and luminaires. Developed on the industry-leading 88EM8183, the driver IC family features a unique mixed-signal architecture with advanced digital algorithms. The 88EM8187 product line offers unparalleled performance and is fully compatible with more than 250 dimmers worldwide, with depth dimming as low as 1% without flicker. This product line extends lamp life due to its excellent temperature regulation and 90% power efficiency.

The 88EM8187 product line also significantly reduces the number of required electronic components, reducing the overall cost of the solution. Marvell teamed up with lighting control leader Lutron to test the pre-release version of the IC. The test results show that the 88EM8187 has unparalleled dimming performance. The 88EM8187 is also part of the Marvell IoT Smart Home Lighting portfolio, which provides a total solution for interconnected smart lighting applications. Marvell has begun sampling 88EM8187 to major LED lighting OEMs and ODMs worldwide. Marvell customers are expected to deliver 88EM8187 based products this year.

Marvell and Lutron Electronics

Marvell has worked with Lutron Electronics to confirm the dimming compatibility between the pre-release versions of the 88EM8187 reference design and various Lutron LED lighting control solutions. The Lutron LED Center of Excellence provides a service for the lighting industry to test the compatibility of LED lights with Lutron C•L series dimmers. This series of dimmers is designed for LED lamps using industry-leading C•L technology, but is also listed by UL as suitable for incandescent, halogen and CFL lamps.
