Divine DIY: Converting the 1996 Honda sedan into an electric car

If time is abundant, TI's employee Stephen Holland can easily build a car by himself.

In fact, the electric car he was driving to work was legally converted by the Honda Civic produced in 1996, after which he was converted into a racing car. “I know the car very well, and in some ways, this is no longer a Honda car,” said Stephen, senior applications engineer in the Power Management Solutions (BMS) division at TI's Silicon Valley Simulation (SVA) office. However, this is not the first time Stephen has shown his talents. Stephen started playing with the car from high school, but his first real DIY result was a small Chevrolet engine for a 1978 Camaro sedan. “I like the feeling of conceptualizing something, then doing research, and finally completing it and successfully achieving the stated goals,” he said. "There is nothing better than a sense of accomplishment."

Stephen joined National Semiconductor (NS) in 2002 as a Principal Application Engineer responsible for automotive Bluetooth telematics. Later, he began to be responsible for the active battery equalization chipset, which is the first battery management product that NS Labs launched in 2008. He has become an expert in battery management and even created the "14-channel active battery-balanced battery management reference design" from TI Design. "There is no doubt that he has applied this technology to his Honda Civic.

About this Honda Civic sedan, after comparing all kinds of new red manual hatchbacks, Stephen bought the Honda Civic in 1998. Although the car dealer told him that he had sold out, he subsequently discovered a 1996 DX with a very low mileage and without any modifications. In the past few years, he has carried out many modifications to the car, hoping that it can perform better while driving safely. He said, "I finally took this car to participate in the car off-road race, and Civic was also the ideal choice. From the suspension to the engine to the interior, I have completely remodeled the vehicle. Unfortunately, this car will soon be unable to travel legally in California. ”

Because of the formation of the family, Stephen's enthusiasm for this high consumer craving has slowly faded. In addition, the Civic is naturally unable to compete with Mazda Miatas and Subaru WRX. “Another reason is that the price of oil is too high,” he said. “I decided to turn this car into a good commuter tool. So I have to make this car legal again.” Because he was working on the main original equipment at the time. Designing a battery management integrated circuit (IC), Stephen took the initiative: "Maybe I should build an electric car of my own."

Stephen spent several months designing the following components:

· 51x 160Ah Thundersky LiFePO4 battery

· With the help of TI employees Francis Houde and John Kircheofer from Fort Collins, Colorado, Stephen designed the TI EM1401 evaluation board. This board all uses TI's products to provide 5A active battery equalization.

· 14-channel active battery equalization battery management reference design

· 1000A water-cooled DC motor controller

· Maximum power is about 150kW at 200hp, 250ftlbs

· Car net weight 2900 pounds

· The car dashboard has been transformed into an Android ODROID dashboard with a 7-inch touch screen that displays real-time power, voltage, current and power consumption per mile.

Stephen completed the renovation at the end of July, and since then he has been driving the electric car to work almost every day. At present, this electric vehicle modified by him has passed the inspection in California and obtained the electric vehicle license. "Now the car no longer needs to be tested for exhaust gas," Stephen said. In about 80 miles, the mileage of this electric car has recently exceeded 4,500 miles. Compared to his F150 pickup truck, Stephen has saved more than $1,000 in fuel costs. What is the handling performance of this Honda? Stephen said that the handling of the vehicle is exactly the same as he expected. He explained, “I have made major changes to the suspension of the car during the auto-X racing event, but now as an electric car, the car is more balanced and has a lower center of gravity than before, so the handling performance It has also been greatly improved."
