Color perception varies from person to person? Exploring the perceived relationship between the human brain and the light source

Women hate blue and men like blue? Old people and young people like the different shades of light? What happened to the "discoloration" skirt? Can retailers attract more customers through lighting fixtures? How do lighting stores create an atmosphere in electronics stores and luxury boutiques? In this article, you will find the answer.

INTRODUCTION: In February, a Scottish girl unwittingly raised a question about the color of her skirt on the social media Tumblr, and the dress quickly exploded on the Internet. Celebrities and the public have joined the discussion of the skirt. Everyone is divided into two firm factions. One thinks that the skirt is "white gold" and the other thinks that the skirt is "blue and black." The discussion about the color has been raging until mid-March.

Why do you "see different colors"? Various gods have appeared to present dazzling explanations: genetics, light illusion, visual perception, lighting effects, and so on. On the topic of this dress, LEDinside interviewed two experts from Purui Optoelectronics - Ms. Maria Topete and Aaron Merill, asking them to analyze the interesting phenomenon of this "skirt" from the perspective of lighting and visual perception, and for retail. The owner provides inspiration related to lighting.

interviewee:

Maria Topete, Director of Engineering Applications, Purui Optoelectronics

Aaron Merrill, Senior Marketing Director, Puri Optoelectronics

The picture above shows the skirt that was on the Internet. What color do you see?

Q: Some experts believe that the yellow light and its reflected light will cause people to have visual deviation, so that the skirt looks golden and white. In addition, due to insufficient light, the light signal is not enough to give the human brain a judgment that "the skirt is in the backlight", which also causes people to misinterpret the color of the skirt. Others interpret this as a visual phenomenon, and even some people use genetics or biology to explain this event. So, how does Puri explain this “discoloration” skirt?

Topete: There are a lot of sayings about this dress's "colors that vary from person to person". First of all, people's perception of light is very personal, and different people will have different feelings. Secondly, the "color" we see is actually the light reflected from the skirt. Therefore, if the light spectrum projected on the skirt lacks a certain color (such as blue), or the content of this color is very small, then the light will not be reflected from the skirt, resulting in people The visual perception of the skirt is different. In addition, if the light source is very bright, we will lose the ability to distinguish colors due to glare.

The revelation we get from here is that the development of lighting sources needs to be "people-oriented". Try to use the sample of human perception of light as the basis for research and development, so as to avoid different people getting an unbalanced feeling when they perceive the light source. For example, Puri's Class A LED light source can display the most vivid colors. But no matter what color, you can get a particularly comfortable visual experience. How did we do it? The answer is: We have introduced the GAI index when examining the quality of the light source by studying a large number of real human brain samples of light perception. Therefore, to ensure that Puri's LED products can bring people the most comfortable "light".

The above picture shows the use of different physical objects in the Puri Optoelectronics Laboratory to verify the color of LED light source products.

Q: Will people's visual perceptions vary by age and gender?

Topete: Yes, the difference in age is also one of the reasons for people's perception of color differences. For example, infants are more aware of blue than adults.

Merril: As people grow older, people will prefer colors that feel warmer and calmer, while colors like traditional lighting (such as white light from incandescent lamps) can also bring more people to older people. Good feeling. Teenagers and people under the age of 30 are more likely to accept fresh, unconventional light colors, and they are more acceptable for light with extreme cold or extreme warm tones.

People's perceptions and preferences for color are even more "men and women." Compared with most men, women are more sensitive to light source quality and have higher discrimination. However, there is no research to determine whether a woman is born with a "shopping gene" or the ability to recognize this light. Puri's research has such interesting findings: women in North America and Europe do not like very blue light. In contrast, studies have shown that men in any part of the world are more likely to accept the cool, cool-color, partial-blue light lines that LED light sources often use.

Q: What kind of lighting and color temperature should retailers use to avoid color distortion? For retail stores (food grocery stores, fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, restaurants, etc.) in different industries, what are the recommendations for color temperature selection? Should retailers pay special attention to the color temperature of the store? Does the illumination angle and lighting device also have an effect on human perception of color?

Topete: This is really a difficult question to answer, because there are many factors to consider, such as the infrastructure of the retail store, the type of goods sold, the image of the store that the merchant wants to create, and so on. In order to minimize color distortion, you need to choose a source with a high-quality spectrum—that is, the range of colors in the spectrum is complete and the number is appropriate. The CRI index and the GAI index measure the quality of the light source and help retail owners find the most suitable high-quality light source. At the same time, adjusting the correlated color temperature is also an effective way to create a good light source.

Merrill: A good retail owner not only has to choose the right color temperature to ensure the merchandise display, but also creates a comfortable environment that enhances employee productivity. We will advise the owner to choose the right color for the interior lighting according to their primary business objectives. First of all, in the use of light sources, owners need to decide whether they want to improve lighting efficiency or improve lighting quality. If you want to save energy, we recommend choosing a light source with a cooler color temperature and a lower color rendering index. If the owner pays more attention to the texture of the light source, he should choose a warm light source with a higher CRI index.

Not long ago, Puri helped San Francisco's Green Apple Books reinvent the store's lighting system, which is a good case. The owner of the Green Apple Bookstore hopes to create a higher-end shopping environment for the store through lighting to attract more customers. So we installed 120 pieces of Class A products as light sources in our 2,400 square foot store, which greatly improved the lighting in the store while reducing energy consumption. Under the lighting conditions of high-quality light sources, the cover color of the books in the store has become more dynamic and eye-catching, giving customers an excellent aesthetic experience.

The picture above shows the Green Apple Bookstore after upgrading the lighting system with Purui Optoelectronic Class A products.

Merrill: It's hard to define a “appropriate” CCT index or CRI index for all retail owners, as different stores have different lighting requirements. For example, the color temperature and lighting usage of Apple retail stores and Louis Vuitton stores are very different. Apple needs to create a technological and modern shopping environment, using bright, impactful, cool-toned neutral white light in its retail stores (eg, correlated color temperature 4000K, high CRI index, high GAI index) . Louis Vuitton stores need to create a comfortable, warm and luxurious shopping experience for consumers, so they use more warm colors (for example: correlated color temperature 2700K~3000K, high CRI index, high GAI index). In this light, the color of the handbag in the store is also more vivid and rich.

Q: Is there any new technology or product available from Purui Optoelectronics to help owners more accurately achieve lighting and create a shopping atmosphere? Is it possible to make the illumination source more harmonious with natural light?

Topete: The first thing to note is that daylight will change over the course of a day, and the combination of light source and natural light of lighting equipment is very difficult to master due to differences in terrain, altitude and season. But Puri has always been committed to developing high-quality light source products that can solve this problem.

Merrill: We recently released the latest developments - the Décor series of Class A LED array light sources, which are the most natural and most comfortable light source in the market. Although Class A does not fully achieve the natural light effect of the product, it is a full-spectrum light source with a very high GAI index. At the same time, color adjustment, brightness adjustment, natural light collection, etc. are all new areas that Purui Optoelectronics is currently working on. We are confident that through these studies, we will further develop LED light source products that are closer to natural light effects.

Q: What role does phosphor play in the design of LED light source products?

Topete: Phosphors convert blue light into multiple spectra to produce the desired white light source. Therefore, phosphor formulations are particularly important in LED products, which determine the composition of the spectrum and the hue and color temperature characteristics of the resulting light.

Q: For the lighting equipment on the market that is dedicated to the retail industry, is there any good advice for Puri when choosing the right phosphor?

Topete: Choosing the right phosphor requires a lot of consideration, including whether the phosphor produces a high-quality spectrum, and whether the resulting lighting fixture is reliable throughout the life of the product and throughout the life of the product.

Q: What kind of professional advice does Puri have on how to improve the color rendering index? What do you think about CQS color quality and GAI index? Which standard do you predict will be more widely adopted by the LED industry in the future?

Merrill: The Lighting Research Center uses a large number of samples with different cultural backgrounds and demographic characteristics to study how people react to light sources. In the experiment, they let the participants participate in the light source of high CRI and high GAI. The results show that people feel very comfortable with this light source. Such a light source with a CRI index and a GAI index greater than 80 has thus been named Class A light source by the American Lighting Research Center. Class A's chromatographic index is also the index standard for measuring the most complete light source.

In the process of research and development, the American Lighting Research Center used Purui's light source products as experimental light sources. After Class A was invented, Purui Optoelectronics successfully manufactured and released the Vero series of on-chip LED array light sources based on Class A source chromatography. This range of products will provide outstanding lighting solutions for high-end retail, hospitality, museums and commercial applications. Purui Optoelectronics Class A LED array light source products have three specifications: color temperature 3000 K, color temperature 3500K and color temperature 3000K.

As for the standard for measuring light sources, there may be more to talk about here. As more and more research institutions (such as the American Lighting Research Center, Penn State University) continue to advance the research on the impact of LED light spectrum on humans, the measurement standards of light source quality have been continuously developed and improved.

The CRI color rendering index has been used as a measure of the quality of light sources for a long time. However, many professionals in the industry have proposed that the CRI index as a single measure of light source is flawed. It has obvious limitations in terms of color coverage and contrast, so it is not possible to accurately display the full spectrum source.

CQS color quality is a standard that has been proposed in recent years. It reflects the quality of the light source more than the CRI index because it uses 15 test patterns and has higher chroma performance. But the CQS standard is not widely accepted because it still does not fully display the full spectrum source of natural light.

The single measure of the CRI color rendering index or the CQS index as a light source is not comprehensive. It is like you have to describe how hot the summer in Hong Kong is, and you just tell others that Hong Kong has 30 degrees Celsius, but it does not mention that. 100% air humidity that "cooked" people.

The Research Center for Lighting (LRC), with the support of the Solid State Lighting System Technology Alliance (ASSIST) Fund, has intensively studied the color quality of light sources. Through a large number of human brain sensing light source samples, the GAI full color gamut index calculation method has been introduced, which is more accurate. It reflects people's perception of color, while measuring the intensity of color and the saturation of the source. Simultaneous detection of the CRI color rendering index and the GAI full color gamut index provides a more comprehensive picture of the entire spectrum to find the highest quality source. This new standard is recognized in the LED industry and is considered to be the most comprehensive and scientific testing standard available today.

Take a deep breath, close your eyes, the world has the freshest oxygen ... Yu Quan's "Deep Breath" is well known to us, but as the environmental problems become more and more serious, the haze sky also increases, PM2.5 PM10 and so on Vocabulary has also been mentioned more and more, and air purifiers have quickly become popular on the market with this "air quality" trend. Along with this, the air-clean brand has sprung up, and various technologies are dazzling. Which ones are indeed effective and which are just tasteless propaganda? How does the Air Purifier bother us to get rid of pollution? And look at the editors for you.

Analysis of air purifier

The critical value of PM2.5 content is 75 μg / m3

The pollutants in the air mainly include soot, total suspended particulates, inhalable particulates (PM2.5) and fine particulates (PM10). The smaller the diameter of the particulates, the deeper the part that can enter the respiratory tract. 10 micron diameter particles It is deposited in the upper respiratory tract, and particles below 2 microns can penetrate 100% into the bronchiole and alveoli.

1k-5k air purifier prices vary greatly

The air purifier products on the market not only have various functions, but also have prices ranging from thousand yuan to tens of thousands. The pricing of imported products is generally higher than that of domestic brands. Except for the core technology of many brands, the promotion of purification effects is similar, and consumers need to choose according to demand.

The air quality standard of 74 key cities is only 4.1%

According to the data of the press conference held by the State Council Information Office on June 4, according to the new "Ambient Air Quality Standards", the six pollutants SO2, NO2, PM10, PM2.5, CO and O3 were evaluated, 74 new standards In the first phase of monitoring and implementation, the proportion of cities that met the ambient air quality standards was only 4.1%, and the other 256 cities implemented the old air quality standards, and the proportion of cities that met the standards was 69.5%.

Air purifier sales increased by 90.5% compared with last year

According to a report recently released by the China Electronics and Information Industry Development Institute, due to the haze weather, air purifiers have become the most concerned home appliance products, with sales of nearly 2.4 million units nationwide last year, a year-on-year increase of 90.5%; retail The amount reached 5.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 105.9%.

HEPA filter needs to be replaced in March

The filter of the air purifier is the same as the filter of the water purifier, and it is not effective for a long time. After long-term use, the accumulation of dust on the surface of the filter will also cause the filter to gradually fail. Therefore, when the haze is more serious, the non-washable HEPA filter needs to be replaced every three months.

Merchants claim that the purification rate is more than 99% for the concept of stealing

99% or even 99.99% seems to have become a slogan for many air purifiers on the market. Many brands of products promote their high removal rate of PM2.5 and formaldehyde. In fact, this kind of publicity is more of a kind. The slogan of stealing the concept, the removal rate of 99% is the effect of the material itself on PM2.5 and formaldehyde, not the effect of actually running in space.
