Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), led by its founder and chairman, Dr. Morris Chang, recently revealed in a company meeting that the company is set to begin construction on a 3nm fabrication plant in 2020. However, contrary to some speculation, TSMC has decided not to establish this facility in the United States but will instead remain in Taiwan, specifically in the Southern Science Park.
Dr. Chang emphasized that TSMC is confident the local government will address the hydropower land requirements necessary for the 3nm plant's construction and will provide full support throughout the process. This commitment reflects TSMC’s long-term strategy to strengthen its presence in Taiwan while maintaining its leadership in semiconductor manufacturing.
According to previous statements from Dr. Chang, the construction of the 3nm plant is expected to cost over $20 billion. The project is also anticipated to attract key suppliers to follow up on the development, further boosting economic growth in the Tainan region.
While Dr. Chang did not specify an exact timeline for the completion or mass production of the 3nm process, he noted that even without considering potential challenges, the earliest possible date would be 2023. This timeline positions TSMC ahead of major competitors like Intel, which has yet to fully transition to the 10nm process.
Considering the industry’s typical pace of development—where each generation of technology typically takes about three years to mature—it’s likely that achieving full 3nm production could take around ten years. Despite these complexities, TSMC remains well-positioned to maintain its technological edge.
In addition, Dr. Chang estimated that TSMC’s revenue will grow between 5% and 10% over the next three years, reflecting confidence in the company’s future performance and market demand.
