Drones first captured public attention and appeared in popular TV shows like "Where is Daddy?" In February 2015, a news story about singer Wang Feng using a drone to propose to Zhang Ziyi with a diamond ring at her birthday party made headlines and caught the eyes of millions. This event marked a turning point, bringing drones into the mainstream spotlight.
Since 2015, as consumer-grade multi-rotor UAV technology matured, prices became more accessible, with high-definition aerial drones available for around 3,000 yuan. These drones could reach altitudes of up to 500 meters. That same year, Shenzhen's drone boom fueled an explosive growth in the consumer drone industry, attracting a flood of entrepreneurs and investors. According to an industry insider, "If you just mention a 'drone' in your business plan, whether or not you understand the technology or have a strong team, you can almost secure angel investment."
Civil drones are broadly divided into two categories: consumer and industrial. While consumer drones are mainly used for aerial photography and entertainment, industrial drones find applications in agriculture, power line inspections, oil pipeline monitoring, logistics, medical aid, and more. The potential for innovation in these sectors has sparked growing interest.
Investment in the drone market accelerated rapidly. According to the "Civil UAV Market Analysis Report," venture capital funding for drone manufacturers and developers surpassed double the amount from 2014. DJI, one of the leading companies, raised $750 million in its B-round financing, achieving a valuation of $8–10 billion. Shenzhen, the fastest-growing market, was home to over 300 drone companies, with annual sales exceeding 20 billion yuan.
However, by the end of 2016, the market faced challenges. A surge of low-cost, similar drones led to intense competition and longer return cycles, causing investor enthusiasm to wane. With the market saturation and DJI’s dominant position, the consumer drone bubble burst. Startups lacking core technology and financial backing began to exit the market.
Companies like Zero Intelligence experienced sudden layoffs, while others, such as Yihang Airlines, faced financial troubles. Reports surfaced of debt issues, highlighting the risks of rapid expansion without sustainable models.
In addition to internal struggles, external concerns emerged. From mid-2016, numerous incidents involving unauthorized drone flights posed threats to aviation safety, raising regulatory concerns.
To address these issues, the Civil Aviation Administration introduced stricter regulations, including the "Light and Small UAV Operation Regulations" and the "UAV Driver Management Regulations." These measures aimed to ensure safer and more responsible use of drones.
Despite a slight decline in sales in 2016, DJI began shifting focus toward industrial drones. Even in markets where it had a strong presence, the company explored new opportunities in industrial applications. Industry sources noted that DJI already held significant market share in power grid inspections.
The technological advancements in consumer drones also laid the foundation for industrial applications. Over three years, from June 2013 to June 2016, the number of UAV-related patents in China increased significantly. Breakthroughs were achieved in key areas such as body design, materials, flight control, wireless communication, and image transmission.
While the question remains whether industrial drones can create real value, their potential is vast. Drones are now being used in agriculture, power inspection, 3D mapping, security, medical delivery, and even drug enforcement. As one expert said, “You can think of any industry where drones might be applied.â€
For success in the industrial sector, deep integration with specific service areas is essential. According to Zhang Hao of Xingye Capital, “The upstream industrial chain offers more scalability.†Future successful drone companies must provide comprehensive solutions—from hardware and software to cloud infrastructure—tailored to customer needs.
Although the transformation from consumer to industrial drones is underway, it has not yet reached the explosive growth seen in 2015. The industry is still in the early stages of accumulation, preparing for future expansion.
