If the glory of home projectors in the 720p era belonged to Mitsubishi, then the spotlight in the 1080p era was claimed by Optoma. The HD25 model from Optoma helped many people realize their dream of a big-screen home theater. Entering the 4K era, Optoma finally unveiled its first 4K projector, the UHD620, after years of quiet development.
**Unremarkable Design**
The Optoma UHD620 doesn't have an eye-catching design; it's rather understated. The 1.6x lens can project a 100-inch screen from just 3.06 meters away, and a 120-inch screen requires at least 3.7 meters. This makes it ideal for most living rooms.
The UHD620 features manual zoom and focus, with the focus ring located on the lens. The zoom ring and lens shift knob are hidden under a cover above the lens. However, the lens shift is limited—like most DLP projectors, it only offers a 0–15% vertical offset.
All menu buttons are located on the side of the unit, which I find practical because they are rarely used. Placing them on the top would otherwise affect the aesthetic appearance.
The rear panel houses all the ports, with two HDMI inputs. Only HDMI 2 supports HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, and 4K, so connecting a 4K player must be done through this port. HDMI 1 only supports HDMI 1.4a. The UHD620 also includes a built-in speaker, along with 3.5mm audio input and output ports. It’s puzzling why high-end projectors still include built-in speakers when most users will likely pair it with a dedicated sound system.
**Extensive Menu Options**
With a brightness of 3,200 lumens, the UHD620 delivers impressive light output right from startup. I immediately adjusted the brightness settings. The projector offers several preset modes: Cinema, HDR, Vivid, Game, Reference, Bright, and User. The Bright mode is best for daylight or ambient lighting, while the Cinema mode is ideal for dark environments. If you're using a large screen (133 inches or more), the high brightness ensures clarity.
However, the HDR mode isn’t automatically activated. You need to manually switch to it when playing HDR content. Testing SDR sources in HDR mode made colors more vibrant but slightly altered the original tone, so it’s not recommended for standard content.
The UHD620 also provides various picture adjustment options, such as multiple gamma settings like Film, Video, Graphics, and Standard (2.2, 1.8, 2.0, 2.4). I recommend using the Film mode for a natural look. The Brilliant Color feature enhances brightness, color saturation, and contrast, making the image more vivid. I usually set it to "3" for optimal results.
Another point to note is the remote control’s backlight. While it works well in bright conditions, it can be too bright in low-light environments, causing discomfort.
**Image Quality Evaluation**
As a 4K projector, the UHD620 shines when tested with 4K sources. Using an OPHD UDP-205 4K Blu-ray player, I found that the projector delivers rich colors and sharp images, typical of DLP technology. Its high contrast ratio (up to 1,000,000:1) allows for excellent detail and depth. In "Fast & Furious 8," the HDR mode enhanced sunlight effects, with clear highlights and shadows, especially on metallic surfaces.
I also appreciated the UHD620’s skin tone accuracy, though some blacks didn’t fully sink due to the high brightness. Adjusting brightness too much could result in loss of shadow details.
When testing 1080p content, the UHD620 still performed well, delivering cleaner and more detailed images than expected from a 4K projector.
**Summary**
As Optoma’s flagship 4K projector, the UHD620 offers great value for its price, making it a strong contender in the market. It inherits the high-contrast and sharpness of DLP projectors, along with high brightness. For those looking to experience 4K without breaking the bank, the UHD620 is a solid choice for a home theater setup.
