As a result, this technology is seen as a crucial entry point for smart manufacturing and has become a focal area for many companies. Thanks to intelligent voice technology, human-machine communication has transitioned from concept to reality. Devices such as stereos, furniture, cars, and industrial machinery are now capable of "talking" with users. To keep up with the AI revolution, institutions like companies, hospitals, schools, governments, and courts are partnering with voice tech firms to accelerate the development of smart hardware solutions. Recently, it was reported that HKUST Telecom, China’s largest intelligent voice technology provider, will invest 200 million yuan to establish an intelligent voice industry base in Tianjin Airport over the next four months. This project marks another significant step in HKUST’s expansion within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Fang Ming, director of the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Research Center, mentioned that the new intelligent voice industry base is currently under renovation and is expected to be operational by April next year. The facility will cover sectors such as smart hardware, voice platforms, cloud computing research, and dual-platform systems, with an anticipated market scale of 10 billion yuan. As smart manufacturing advances, AI-driven technologies are also making their way into personal consumption. Products like smart home systems, companion robots, and smart remote controls are gaining popularity. Even industry leader HKUST has shifted its focus from B2B to B2C, recognizing the growing demand in the consumer market. According to Fang Ming, HKUST’s three main business groups are expanding rapidly. While smart education and smart cities remain key areas, the consumer segment is now the largest. This division focuses on delivering personalized services tailored to individual user needs. However, the C-side market is highly competitive. Companies like Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, once clients of HKUST, have now become competitors, leveraging their vast user bases. This shift presents a major challenge for HKUST, especially given the fast-paced technological advancements and the strong presence of these tech giants. Despite these challenges, HKUST continues to invest in R&D and explore new application scenarios to drive innovation. Since 2011, the company has been based in Tianjin Binhai New Area, building a team of over 120 employees. They’ve focused on AI voice recognition and big data algorithms, working on projects in education, government services, and healthcare—such as smart education initiatives with Tianjin Middle School and smart city developments with the Binhai New Area government. The concept of "scene gives meaning to the product" has become central to modern product design. For example, ride-hailing apps like Didi and Uber only gained value when they addressed real travel needs, and mobile payments became essential when they solved daily transaction issues. In the context of smart manufacturing, logistics could be the catalyst that drives the entire industry chain forward. Recently, Jingdong, a major e-commerce company, announced plans to build a "Jingdong Smart Logistics Industry Cluster and National New Generation Artificial Intelligence Application Demonstration Base" in the Tianjin Development Zone. According to the TEDA Management Committee, the project will include smart logistics equipment R&D centers, national-level AI demonstration zones, and a first-of-its-kind smart logistics upgrade platform. It will span 1,000 mu, with the first phase covering 300 mu and the second 700 mu, aiming for an annual output value exceeding 15 billion yuan. While the long-term vision is ambitious, the immediate goal for Jingdong is clear: to develop unmanned warehouses, delivery vehicles, and drones as part of its smart logistics R&D and testing infrastructure. This initiative aims to create a large-scale integrated intelligent logistics cluster. The competition for drone delivery has already intensified. In 2017, Shunfeng Logistics secured approval for a drone delivery demonstration zone in Cangzhou City, marking a significant milestone in the normalization of drone-based logistics. This event signals a turning point for the industry and opens up new possibilities for demand in sectors like drones, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned ships. In the field of autonomous vehicles, companies like Cainiao and JD Logistics are conducting trials. Alibaba tested its technology at its park, while JD.com launched trials at Renmin University, where Liu Qiangdong studied. These efforts reflect the growing momentum behind smart transportation and the future of logistics.
