Because the development of similar Internet of Things (M2M) applications has driven the demand for mobile solutions, mobile computing has become mainstream.

In the past few years, although the consumer-grade handheld device market has grown dramatically, they have not been able to replace rugged handheld devices because they cannot meet the requirements for ruggedness.

Rugged handheld device

The rugged handheld device is designed to remain intact in daily use in harsh environments, including drops, water immersion, high vibration and extreme temperatures, and destructive factors such as EMI and RFI. Typically, rugged handheld devices have an IP67 (protection rating) rating and meet the MIL-STD (US military standard) drop test standards.

Commercial-grade handheld device manufacturers have tried to use secondary market accessories to make their devices sturdy, but the effect is very limited, thus proving that "similar to ruggedness" is completely different from "designed ruggedness." Robust design means that all aspects of the device must take into account rugged specifications, from component selection to sealing and protection of vulnerable areas. In other words, rugged equipment is rugged both inside and outside.

Rugged handheld devices are expensive, usually they cost twice as much as commercial handheld devices, but the ruggedized version saves costs during their lifetime because they experience less downtime and are more reliable in daily use , And the service life is longer. Obviously the cost of downtime exceeds the impact on direct users – they also disappoint customers. Not surprisingly, a recent study by VDC Research (2011) showed that from the perspective of total cost of ownership (TCO), ruggedized equipment is not that expensive during a five-year period.

Expect

The market for rugged handheld devices is expected to continue to grow rapidly in the coming years, as evidenced by the following trends:

Smart staff. Institutions give staff more freedom and responsibility-through "smart network" support, the number of applications for each mobile device must be increased; the functions and processing capabilities of existing devices need to be improved. In addition, the “always on” connection of field staff requires a relatively inexpensive and extremely reliable embedded wireless solution.

Sustainability. The trend to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, reduce fuel costs and reduce paperwork requires rugged mobile communication systems to support these attempts. At the same time, rugged handheld devices are converging; it used to be a separate barcode scanner, RFID reader and camera, and now it is clear that it needs to be integrated into one device without making it too complicated.
