Global shipments of smart Internet devices exceeded 1 billion units in 2012

In the morning news on March 28th, Beijing time, the US market research company IDC released a report on Tuesday that global shipments of smart Internet devices increased by 29.1% in 2012, surpassing the 1 billion mark, with a total value of US $ 576.9 billion.

IDC pointed out that the growth of this market is largely due to the 78.4% increase in shipments of tablet PCs. The shipments of these products in 2012 reached 128 million units.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, the total shipments of desktops, notebooks, tablets, and smartphones were close to 378 million units, with sales exceeding US $ 168 billion. In terms of market share, the gap between Apple and the market leader has narrowed significantly. Apple ’s iPhone 5 and iPad mini boosted the company ’s fourth-quarter shipment share to 20.3%, slightly lower than Samsung ’s 21.2%. Apple's sales are still dominated by 30.7%, Samsung is about 20.4%.

IDC expects that tablet shipments will surpass desktops in 2013 and notebooks in 2014. In 2013, global desktop shipments are expected to decline by 4.3%, while notebooks will increase slightly by 0.9%. At the same time, tablet shipments are expected to hit a new high of 190 million units this year, a year-on-year increase of 48.7%, and the smartphone market is also expected to grow by 27.2%, achieving 918.5 million unit shipments.

By region, shipments of smart Internet devices in emerging markets increased by 41.3% in 2012, tablet PCs increased by 111.3%, and smartphones increased by 69.7%. Shipment of smart Internet devices in mature markets increased by 15.6% in 2012, and the PC market shrank dramatically.

IDC expects that before the end of 2017, tablets and smartphones will still have huge growth potential in emerging markets. During this period, tablet shipments are expected to double, with sales reaching US $ 125 billion; smartphone shipments are also expected to double, with sales reaching US $ 462 billion. On the other hand, notebooks can only maintain a single-digit percentage increase, while desktops are likely to decline year after year, with little growth in 2017.

"Consumer spending in emerging markets usually starts with mobile phones, then switches to tablets, and finally PCs." IDC analyst Megha Saini said, "The pressure on the PC market will increase significantly, and we expect short-term There will not be an effective replacement cycle, which will put pressure on PC sales. "

Looking ahead, IDC expects that global smart Internet devices will continue to grow, surpassing 2.2 billion units in 2017, with sales reaching US $ 814.3 billion.

"Consumers and corporate buyers are now beginning to treat smartphones, tablets and PCs as the same type of Internet-connected device, the main difference is only the screen size." Bob O'Donnell, vice president of IDC client and display projects Donnell) said, "The main purpose of each device is data applications, and different people will choose different screen sizes to suit their unique needs. This development will create exciting new opportunities to continue to promote smart Internet access. The equipment market is developing in a positive direction. "
