Digital laser tachometers offer three distinct advantages over other non-contact speed measurement devices. First, they can operate at a non-contact distance of up to 10 meters, making them suitable for measuring speeds in hard-to-reach or hazardous environments. Second, unlike other non-contact sensors, laser tachometers can accurately measure the rotational speed of animals, such as birds or small mammals, without disturbing them. This makes them ideal for use in biological and ecological research. Additionally, their operation is straightforward, and the readings are highly reliable. Third, these devices exhibit strong resistance to external interference, ensuring accurate performance even in challenging conditions. The laser sensor in a laser tachometer works by detecting the rotation of an object. As shown in Figure 10-10, the system uses a helium-neon laser that emits a beam. This beam passes through a half-mirror, with half of its intensity directed toward the object being measured. The light then travels through a lens system and is focused on the surface of the rotating object. A small piece of reflective material, often referred to as "reflective tape," is attached to the object's surface. When the laser beam hits the reflective tape, most of the light is scattered in various directions. However, due to the special "directional reflection" property of the tape, a portion of the laser light is reflected back along the same path it came from. This reflected beam passes through the half-mirror again and is focused onto a phototransistor. Each time the object completes one full rotation, the reflective tape is illuminated once, causing a single laser pulse to be sent back to the sensor. This pulse is converted into an electrical signal, which is then processed to determine the rotational speed. As the object continues to rotate, a series of pulses are generated, forming a continuous signal that represents the speed of rotation. This method ensures high accuracy and reliability, making laser tachometers a preferred choice in many industrial and scientific applications.
