In 2004, KIT introduced the concept of a "single-atom transistor," which has since become a key focus for this joint initiative. Building upon this idea, researchers from both institutions will conduct in-depth studies, starting with refining existing designs for logic circuits and memory cells. In the next phase, they aim to develop a simple atomic-scale semiconductor chip, with potential applications in integrated circuits, modulators, and detectors. These innovations could reduce device size and power consumption by up to a thousandfold compared to traditional metal oxide semiconductor devices. The project also aims to develop technologies that are compatible with current manufacturing processes, ensuring a smooth transition to real-world applications. To facilitate this work, a dedicated research center for monatomic electronics and optics was established in January 2018. This collaboration represents a major step forward in pushing the boundaries of nanotechnology and shaping the future of electronic devices.
