Interview with President of OSRAM General Lighting - Lighting has a strong emotional color

Reporter: In the coming few years, what are the major trends in digitalization, new light sources, and energy-efficient products?

Klaus-Günter Vennemann: In the next five years, light-emitting diodes will show rapid development, especially with regard to energy-efficient performance. At the same time, there are new opportunities and potentials in lighting design. We hope that in both of these areas, we can do our best to support our customers. On the other hand, it is necessary to strengthen the communication and exchange of these new technologies. Customers want to know how to use these new technologies. In this sense, the lighting management system is a big topic, but I still think that this issue is a very complicated subject for the entire industry. We can use practical software to make every ordinary person get the benefits of digitalization.

Reporter: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have opened up a whole new world of opportunities for us. What does this mean for Osram?

KGV: LEDs have brought dramatic changes to the lighting industry as a whole. In the next few years, LED products will grow dramatically. From the components, light sources, lamps, and lighting management systems throughout the entire value chain, it will show its profound significance. Therefore, for Osram, providing and promoting smart lighting solutions in the market will become an increasingly important task. For this purpose, our company has already strategically positioned ourselves throughout the entire value chain, not just by acquiring specialized lighting manufacturers like Siteco, Traxon and Encelium.

Reporter: OSRAM now also produces lighting fixtures. Today, with the increasing importance of lighting design, will OSRAM's lighting fixtures be strengthened?

KGV: Yes. Prior to this, OSRAM was fundamentally a light source manufacturer. Through the acquisition of Siteco, OSRAM has taken a big step in entering the lighting fixtures. The interaction between the light source and the luminaire is of great significance for our future, because on this basis, we can provide our customers with the best lighting solutions.

Reporter: You mentioned light emitting diodes above, but organic light emitting diodes? Organic light-emitting diodes caused a great stir in the last "Lights and Buildings" exhibition. What are their development trends?

KGV: Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) produce diffuse light. This is a very good lighting technology. Last summer, we established our first organic light-emitting diode production facility in Regensburg, and we will continue to develop organic light-emitting diodes there.

In OLED, another impressive result we achieved was the creation of a new light efficiency record in June 2011: the new light efficiency is even higher than all the highest peaks recorded before. 40%. We first commercialized organic light-emitting diodes at TÃœV SÃœD's test and inspection facilities and at Allianz Arena in Munich. We have maintained a leading position in this field. Orbeos, which we introduced in 2009, is the first mass-produced organic light-emitting diode (LED) light source panel. Designers can play their part in this regard.

Reporter: The lighting control system now exists. However, there is no doubt that in the future of lighting control, we will see many new things, especially in energy efficiency, there will be more new things. When will the lighting control system become a topic of private residence?

KGV: There is a technology called "ZigBee" that will enter the private housing sector with a brisk pace of development. It is a standardized thing designed for the lighting control technology to enter the mass market, so that ordinary users can afford it. We will integrate this technology into our lighting products in the future. With it, users will be able to control each lamp individually, and each lamp can also communicate with each other.

Our work also includes the use of a lighting control system with a relatively simple remote control device. We first install a specific device in the remote control so that as long as the user can get the lighting atmosphere he wants at any time, he only needs to press the button gently to satisfy his wish.

Reporter: How do the street lights in the future illuminate our town? Will the further development of street lighting technology lead to a reduction in street lamp energy consumption?

KGV: First of all, due to the explosive development of urbanization, the results will inevitably lead to a significant increase in the number of lighting devices used in the world. However, lighting is also used in the advertising and communications field. In other words, light is not only used for lighting, it has also become a medium of communication. For this reason, we will have to consider that in the future more than ever, we need more effective lighting control to save energy. For example, does it mean that we really need to turn all the lights of all our city streets on at 3 o'clock in the morning? We all know that in the future we must be more intelligent in the management of energy, and the management of lighting and lighting is one of the key factors. If we look at our overall electricity consumption, we will find that the power consumption of lighting lighting accounts for 20% of the power consumption. As a manufacturer providing complete lighting systems, we are an industry leader and we must adapt to this development. Today, three-quarters of the products we manufacture have been classified as energy-efficient, even in accordance with extremely stringent standards.

Reporter: Light and human emotions are inextricably linked. Is this why consumers are so sensitive to the topic of lighting? Why are people not always so smooth when communicating these topics?

KGV: This is true. Light is really easy to affect people's emotions. In our private life, cars are usually our biggest expense item. However, what kind of lighting products we choose to buy has the greatest impact on our emotions, because we spend most of our time in the light.

Reporter: Last question, Mr. Vennemann: Can you explain to us what products OSRAM is preparing to display at this year's "Light and Building" exhibition in Frankfurt?

KGV: Osram last year positioned itself as a supplier of complete lighting products and solutions for customers to meet all customer needs. This fact will be reflected in the various products and solutions presented at the 2012 “Lights and Buildings” exhibition we are preparing, including the first lighting solution that we provided in Europe to replace 75W incandescent lamps with light-emitting diodes. The first LED module that conforms to the Zhaga standard, our safe and stable application in the field of LED street lamps around the world, and our latest generation of lighting lighting management system.
