LED packaging companies die hard but the LED industry is limited

Although the National Development and Reform Commission has officially issued the “China's Roadmap for Phase-out of Incandescent Lamps”, it will ban the sale and import of incandescent lamps for general lighting of 100 watts and above on October 1, 2012. However, this does not mean that there was a LED that is favored by the capital market will benefit.

The high cost of popularizing urban and rural areas is temporarily unrealistic. “Currently, the elimination of incandescent lamps will not be able to make up for the LED, because the current cost of LED is still relatively high.” Xu Huai, Secretary-General of the Chinese Lighting Institute, said, “China’s phase-out of incandescent lamps Immediately after the release of the LED stocks, I believe that it is not very rational."

Xu Huai made the above statement at the press conference on "replacement of old-for-new incandescent lamps" held in Beijing on February 8.

By the end of 2010, the penetration rate of China's high-efficiency lighting products had reached 80%. In 2010, the penetration rate of energy-saving lamps increased by 4 percentage points over 2009. In contrast, the city's popularity is doing better. There are still about 1.3 billion incandescent lamps on the Chinese market, of which about 1 billion are in rural areas. ”

"Because incandescent lamps are used by a few hotels, most of them are rural families, and they are using a few tens of dollars of LED instead of a few dollars of incandescent lamps. I am afraid there is no financial subsidy," said Xu Huai.

According to Ye Ming, director of the International Liaison Department of Philips (China) Investment Co., Ltd., China's application in the LED market has undeniably been at the forefront of the world and is the fastest growing country. Based on this, he believes that "as an explosive development industry, LED will eventually replace other light sources."

However, some analysts pointed out that China’s achievements in the application market are mainly due to the “Ten Cities, Ten Thousand and Ten Thousand Ones” program. According to a survey conducted by the pilot cities of “Ten Cities and Ten Thousand People”, currently 37 pilot cities have implemented more than 2000 demonstration projects, and more than 4.2 million LED lamps have been applied.

In response, Liu Shiping, deputy secretary-general of the China Lighting Association, said: “Now 80% of street lights in the mainland are high-pressure sodium lamps, whose luminous efficacy is 120 lumens/watt, and their luminous efficiency is very high, and the development is also relatively mature. While LEDs try to replace high-pressure sodium lamps, The demand for it is even higher. The experimental life of the LED is 20-30 thousand hours, and the lifetime of a single sodium lamp of 12,000 hours is surely guaranteed."

According to Liu Shiping, a 400W high-pressure sodium lamp, even the power supply does not exceed 1,000 yuan, but a set of LED can replace 400W high-pressure sodium lamp to 5000-8000 yuan, or even approaching million. "The money, whether it is paid by the government or the enterprise, is too costly. In developed regions, it is better to be able to absorb costs. However, if it is first applied from street lamps in less developed regions, it will affect its future market promotion."

Xu Huai also believes that China should focus on promoting LED lighting for indoor lighting in the next stage. “The cost-effectiveness of some indoor lighting products has gradually become more balanced in their life cycle. The lighting products cannot rely on the competitiveness of the market because of the government’s projects, so that more applications are available. Businesses are willing to use it."

However, these positive expectations about the LED market did not slow down the pace of listing of related companies.

Listed speed-up packaging companies will be phased out on December 13, 2011, Jufei Optoelectronics has just passed the IPO application review of the China Securities Regulatory Commission's Growth Enterprise Development Committee, and on December 14, Wanrun Technology immediately sounded the approval of the Securities Regulatory Commission. Commission's door.

On December 16th, the GEM Approval Committee passed the initial applications of Liad and Block Semiconductor. Since then, the IPO applications of the remote optoelectronics and Mosuo Power have also been approved.

It is understood that among these companies that are about to enter the capital market, the main businesses of Jufei Optoelectronics, Wanrun Technology, and Long Semiconductor are all encapsulated.

By the end of 2011, there have been seven LED packaging companies that have landed and are about to enter the capital market, but the market environment is much worse than before. In 2011, the output value of LED packaging in China was 32 billion yuan, an increase of only 18% from last year, which was far below the market's expected growth of more than 30%. In 2010, the growth rate of mainland packaging output reached 35%.

At present, there are 1,500 packaging companies in the mainland, with more than 40 first camps with annual sales of over 100 million yuan, and less than 400 second-tier companies with sales between 10 million yuan and 100 million yuan. About 30%, most of the company's sales are less than 10 million yuan. This is a far cry from the sales of an average of RMB 1 billion in eight listed companies in Taiwan. "It is no wonder that listed companies are using fund-raising projects for the expansion of their main business," said Xu Huai.

However, with the rise of mainland companies, the problem of oversupply in the LED industry, falling product prices, declining gross margins, and slower overall growth are increasingly evident.

National Star Optoelectronics Executive Secretary Party Jianzhong said: "October to December each year is the peak season for home appliance sales, but last year it suffered a peak season." According to reports, National Star's gross margin of optoelectronic products has dropped from 32% in 2010. To 20% in 2011.

"In 2011, there were many LED packaging companies desperately struggling, but in 2012 it entered the stage of excess phase, will shuffle the elimination of some companies." Party Jianzhong said.
