Elon Musk, who serves as the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, initially introduced the concept of the "hyperloop" back in 2013. This futuristic mode of transportation was envisioned to cut the journey from New York to Los Angeles down to just 45 minutes. Musk's idea involved the use of magnetic levitation technology and near-vacuum pipelines powered by electricity. However, despite his groundbreaking proposal, Musk himself never pursued the construction of this super high-speed rail.
A remarkable concept indeed, but Musk once remarked that he wasn’t keen on personally building a hyperloop. Perhaps more accurately, he felt constrained by his current commitments—his focus on space exploration and electric vehicles left him little room to commercialize HSR technology. Instead, he aimed to open up the concept for others to develop. Recently, Hyperloop One successfully tested their prototype in Nevada, achieving a speed of 192 miles per hour. Other companies like Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc. and Arrivo are also actively working on their own versions of the technology.
By mid-2017, however, Musk seemed to have shifted gears. He founded The Boring Company, whose mission is to alleviate urban congestion by transporting cars via high-speed "electric pallets." Additionally, Musk confirmed that his underground "super high-speed rail" system had received informal approval from the U.S. government.
According to Bloomberg, Musk had earlier stated that he wouldn't directly compete with existing hyperloop firms when opening up the technology. Yet now, The Boring Company is reportedly considering building its own underground super high-speed rail system. On their website, the company noted: "By rapidly mining low-cost tunnels, we can make super high-speed rail technology viable, enabling fast transport between densely populated areas—like traveling from New York to Washington, D.C., in under 30 minutes."
In response to inquiries from Bloomberg, The Boring Company emphasized its commitment to accelerating the development of this technology. Despite holding the "Hyperloop" trademark through SpaceX, they expressed support for any company looking to develop the technology. They stated, "We encourage and welcome all efforts to advance hyperloop technology. We don’t intend to block anyone from using the Hyperloop trademark."
This shift in direction highlights Musk's evolving approach to innovation. While the initial hyperloop concept remains aspirational, The Boring Company’s recent developments suggest Musk might be taking a more active role in realizing this vision. It remains to be seen how these efforts will pan out, but the potential impact on global transportation could be transformative.
