Netease Technology News, August 28 — Today, reports from media outlet Qubit claim that a so-called “secret base†of Xinjiang has been uncovered in Shekou, Shenzhen. Allegedly, DJI is conducting tests on unmanned vehicles at this location, with photos of real vehicles being leaked. The unmanned vehicle reportedly tested was a Ford Escape SUV. Externally, the drone appeared to have only a camera and lacked visible LiDAR or other noticeable radar sensors. This setup seems similar to AIMotive’s autonomous driving programs.
In response to these claims, Netease Technology reached out to DJI for clarification regarding their work on autonomous vehicles. DJI replied, stating, “No, we’ve addressed this issue multiple times. These are purely speculations made by online writers.†Previously, during the RoboMaster Mech Masters tournament hosted by DJI, when some media outlets inquired about plans to develop cars, DJI also denied such intentions.
Despite these denials, media speculation continues. Recently, DJI posted job listings for automotive evaluation editors. Additionally, back in August 2015, DJI recruited Tesla Autopilot engineer Darren Liccardo as the Vice President of Global Engineering at their Silicon Valley R&D center. These moves have fueled rumors suggesting DJI might become China’s Tesla. (By Bai Xin)

As someone following DJI closely, I find these developments intriguing. While DJI is primarily known for its drones, expanding into the automotive sector could align with their technological expertise. However, without concrete evidence, it remains just speculation. I’ll keep an eye on any future announcements or developments related to DJI's potential ventures into autonomous driving.
