How to optimize oscilloscope performance?

In this issue, we share a technique for using an oscilloscope—optimizing the performance of the oscilloscope, provided by LeCroy technical expert Wan Lijun.

The following tips can help improve the performance of your oscilloscope, especially if your instrument is under a computer-controlled automated test environment.

1. Let the oscilloscope work from a known state, turning off unused channels and unnecessary measurement, calculation, and analysis functions. For example, call the default setting (Default Setup), or call the saved settings file.

2. In the program-controlled environment, send the command “DISP OFF” to turn off the waveform display, and the oscilloscope can continue to trigger, can read waveform data or automatically save the waveform to the local hard disk.

3. The waveforms acquired by the oscilloscope are usually the most time-consuming operation to transfer to the computer. The oscilloscope's measurement, calculation, and XDEV functions (embedded by the user's own custom signal processing program inside the oscilloscope) are used to process the waveform. The computer only needs to read Take the processed result.

4. If you need the computer to continuously read a waveform that is not too long, let the oscilloscope work in the sequence mode, so that several segments are continuously acquired and then transferred to the computer together. It is also possible to have the oscilloscope work in the state of automatically saving the waveform. Each time it is triggered, the waveform is saved on the local hard disk. After the acquisition, the computer transmits the waveform file in batches.

5. If possible, let the program control software run directly in the operating system of the oscilloscope, which can greatly reduce the waveform transmission time.

6. If you need an oscilloscope to do a lot of measurements, calculations, and analysis, set the oscilloscope to “OpTImize analysis” (menu UTIliTIes Preference Setup...).

7. If you need the oscilloscope to acquire the waveform every time and the computer to read the measurement parameters, you can set the Trend function to record the measurement parameters. After the acquisition is completed, the computer reads all the measured values recorded by the trend function at one time.

8. Before the automatic test is officially started, set the oscilloscope to the vertical scale to be used and the sampling rate (recommended to work in the fixed sampling rate mode) so that the internal auto-calibration function works in advance and can be reduced in the subsequent automatic test process. The frequency of small auto calibration.

9. If the ambient temperature does not change greatly, send the command "AUTO_CALIBRATE OFF" to turn off the temperature calibration function.
