In terms of overall collision results, the Tesla MODEL S achieved excellent (G) results in 40% frontal offset collision, side impact, roof compressive strength and headrest/seat four tests. In the 25% small area offset collision, the Tesla MODEL S only achieved good (A) results. In addition, the car performed poorly in the evaluation of the ease of use of child safety seats, and achieved the results of passing (M); the lighting effect of the headlights corners needs to be improved, and the results of poor (P) are obtained.
In the 25% small overlap area crash test, due to the poor strap restraint, the dummy's body moved forward too far, causing its head to hit the steering wheel through the airbag, and the sensor shows the right side of the dummy in the process. Lower limbs may be injured. Therefore, Tesla MODEL S obtained only three excellent (G) in the subdivision project, and the rest were good (A). The IIHS also found that the roof strength of the MODEL S top model P100D was good (A) due to the weight of the battery pack, and the rest of the models were excellent (G).
In the new headlight lighting effect test in 2017, the MODEL S score is lower (the lowest score of the group), and the far/low beam is well visible when traveling in a straight line, but the visibility is insufficient when entering the curve. In addition, MODEL S has not yet rated its front anti-collision system. According to the information provided by the IIHS, "Although the MODEL S is currently equipped with automatic driving assistance equipment as standard, Tesla has not fully activated the software system of all vehicles, so it will not rate its front anti-collision system."
The above results apply to the Tesla MODEL S models with production dates from October 2016 to January 23, 2017. It is reported that Tesla has communicated with IIHS and will adjust the seat belt restraint and angle of illumination of MODEL S and re-enter the test to impact the “Excellent+†evaluation of 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
