Google Acquires AIMatter to Help AR-VR Business

Computer vision is a branch of artificial intelligence that allows computers to “see” and process images, just like humans (usually better than ours), and then use these images to help run programs. Google this week made an acquisition in the field of computer vision to help it develop in this area.

The search engine and Android giant have already acquired Belarusian startup AIMatter. The company has developed a neural network based AI platform and SDK that can support mobile devices to quickly detect and process images. In addition, AIMatter introduced Fabby, a picture and video editing application as a proof of concept.

Fabby and Google have confirmed this transaction and believe that the AIMatter official website will soon issue a statement about the news. The two parties did not disclose specific terms, but Fabby, which has downloaded more than 2 million times, will continue to operate. Most AIMatter employees will stay in the Google family. AIMatter's employees are located in Minsk, Belarus, the US Bay Area and Zurich, Switzerland (Switzerland is particularly strong in computer vision technology). However, it is not yet clear whether the relevant staff will remain in the field and what they will be responsible for Google.

Fabby has already completed approximately $2 million in financing from investors, including Haxus, a venture capital fund that supports artificial intelligence startups; Aimatter co-founder and chairman Yuri Melnichek (he also founded Maps.me, and was formerly Google. Employees); and Andrei Kulik, executive director of AIMatter.

It is worth mentioning that Haxus also invested in MSQRD, which has been acquired by Facebook; Maps.me, which was acquired by Mail.ru; and Prisma, a popular application that can turn any picture or video into a “painting”.

It is not yet clear how Google will use this technology. The tech giant has been focusing on how to more participate in the next generation of social applications. They hope not only to bring more audiences to these platforms, but also to use them to create new areas of advertising business. .

Given that Snapchat's photo filter technology has had a huge impact on its business strategy, this may be an area that Google is expected to enter. However, it should be noted that Google is also in the field of VR and AR, and computer vision has great applications for VR/AR. In short, there are many possibilities for this.
